steven bc has been busy carving out his own niche in the underground over the past year, primarily on the shall not fade label. house crime were quick to pick up on the distinctive qualities in his lo-fi, pumped up sound and following on from an appearance on house crime vol. 1. bc is back with a whopping great double pack of killer jams from the wild side of the outboard brigade. -drive over- has a nagging lead line that will turn heads despite its stark simplicity, while -between the sheets- plays with boogie tropes and makes them sound delightfully off kilter. start to finish it s a collection of wondefully grubby but utterly fresh jams

once more scouring the annals of disco history for the hottest jams, best look beyond italy and snap up this much-vaunted slice of american funk from 1982. while second hand prices can get out of control, it s not hard to hear why this glittering prize from jagg would be so coveted - it s got everything. jazz-leaning slap bass, mean synthesizer chops and soaring vocals - -take time- is prime to set the party off, and no longer is it the preserve of wealthy collectors. originally a single-sided affair, best have done the right thing and filled the b-side up with an extended version to let that groove roll on even longer.

robin de wolf delivered us three solid tracks under his new alter ego robert d . while un ni yo is a house track with a wavy sound and affective synths, the second a-sided track dommel is a banger that begins with a smooth intro that changes over into hard kicks and raw bass chords. on the b-side, you can find a more melancholic uptempo track that goes by the name of white s wisdom. interstellar funk tops it all off with a remix of un ni yo that combines the wavy sound of the original with synth-heavy electronics. an absolutly killer ep!

chances are if you have a body, a pair of ears and access to some kind of listening device, you’ve at least tapped a foot to ‘shine’ from soul clap and nona hendryx. pure authenticity and vocal integrity is provided in bucket loads by nona (ex-labelle member and purveyor of funk for more than 40 years), while the production maintains soul clap’s sublime freshness. increasing your marimba intake by 200% with two additional versions, hot toddy gives exotic plushness with a diversified rhythm section and melodic bottom lines that lightly entwine, shimmering in the light of nonas voice. scott grooves brings the funk, with an upfront bassline and extra jb-style horns on his horns dub, while the deepah dub takes a housier approach while still keeping the horn stabs. scott finishes off with an echopella of nonas vocals recorded from the international space station. this remix package is everything you would want, and then some.

nyc s legendary west end record label has contributed a fair few classics to the disco cannon and continues to influence dance music today with it s forward looking releases. when you touch me is no exception, recorded and released in the golden year of 1979 and featuring the breathy, sensual vocals of a young tanaa gardner who had previously worked as a backing vocalist for numerous other projects until the label released her (other) stone cold solo classic work that body the same year on 12-. both cuts featured on her self titled debut lp and boasted the combined production and studio talents of kenton nix, bob blank and of course - larry levan. now, that s a serious line-up to have behind the boards (& in the clubs!) and of course when you touch me was a classic with it s slow, elongated intro that calls to mind a sleazier version of donna summer s love hangover before launching into a full-on disco assault that you won t forget in a hurry! yes, the record surprises you, tanaa leads us into a false sense of a slow jam and then - boom - we re off! backed with the incredible instrumental version the 12- is repressed here in it s original 1979 glory, an essential classic that has stood the test of time for the last 30+ years & is now available again, remastered & repressed for 2017 in conjunction with west end records, nyc.

up next on 20/20 vision we welcome the ever-diverse and evolving nathan jonson. following a decade of producing and dj ing as hrdvsion, nathan has stepped out under his birth name to mark a new stage in his career. cross colours is a perfect representation of this new stage, a hybrid of all the styles he has become renowned for. when we heard cross colours we were all in agreement that luke vibert would be the perfect remixer. luckily luke agreed too and turned in a killer take on the original, flirting with early rave and hardcore whilst keeping the electro aesthetic. the b side is rounded off with a club focused version from ralph lawson & rui-z (which has already being championed by seth troxler on his most recent essential mix) and a dark techno rework from exciting new 20/20 signing dokta, who you can expect to hear a lot more from this year.

the practice of pseudoscience, a three track ep by m parent, is the second vinyl release from the us based label chem club records. having been inspired by peripheral thoughts about pseudosciences, this ep is washed in steady emotional build ups using airy reverb, scattering percussion, throbbing stabs and solid kicks. the title track (a1) uses these elements to move towards a piercing synth peak while cycle of intellect (a2) spaces out these features as it creeps to a dubby impactful end. the b side temazcal rites was directly motivated by a scorching summer day when the intensity of the sun sparked an idea for a sizzling percussive experiment. what were left with is a funky but emotive soundscape that tops off the ep in a unique fashion.

the latest release from serbia’s soul print recordings brings together the two l’s, leonid and laak. up first is leonid on the a side with two tracks urania 1 and 2, possibly named after the muse of astronomy, which makes sense, as both tracks have a cosmic feel about them. urania 1 starts off with a nice string sound that permeates the space before the drums start to really take effect half way through. urania 2 has a more house feel about it, with the acid bass line sitting nicely along the deep pads. over to the b side and laak takes control. delving into late night territory with haunting layered leads & pads these tracks are typical quality by laak. featuring label artwork once again by fellow serb, bratislav milenkovic and pressed on a beautiful sky blue, yesterday for tomorrow is a thing of aural and visual beauty.

holic trax off shoot monoklo hits a third firing release now with a new ep from verrina & ventura. verrina & ventura are an italian pair who make fresh house and techno sounds and run the all inn, only 300 and howl labels. they are busy people who put out a lot of music and here serve up some brilliantly unhinged sounds for this darker, more club focussed series. up first, metaluna is a freaky track with shimmering voices and prickly, ticking percussion all underpinned by warm belches of sub-bass. it s a late night cut with plenty of unhinged atmosphere in its glitchy grooves. ork is less kinetic and more settled in a bulky, heavyweight groove. scraping perc and icy hi hats bristle and brim as muted synth stabs bring some colour and soul to the party. the deep and delicious dhrawn has big techno hi hats and more glitching, patchy machine sounds all run through with warming chords. trilling vocals go off in the distance and the whole thing manages to be emotive and human as well as devastatingly direct and dancefloor orientated. last of all, nihil is another visceral track with industrial synths, scurrying bass and sliding drums that makes you want to jerk your body. this is a brilliantly off balance ep full of arresting and inventive grooves aimed squarely at the floor

minimalistic art sublabel, 0000, kicks things off with scribble acid, an ep from man at the top, brayan valenzuela. title track scribble acid is a mixture of acid sounds and saturated kicks combined to create an industrial techno line. 0000 differs, highlighting the simpler sound of acid. error makes use of metallic percussion to devastating effect but is lined with pauses in all the right places to allow you to breathe.

cascades is the music collaboration between two montreal-based musicians, neo-classical pianist jean-michel blais, and genre-defying grammy award-nominated electronic producer mike silver (pka cfcf). building off their sold out performance during the globally-celebrated 2016 red bull music academy, cascades is a stunning 5-song, 30-minute meeting-of-minds that navigates the spaces between the artists’ respective crafts and tendencies toward playful minimalism. featuring new versions from the duo’s catalogues, a reworking of john cage’s “in a landscape”, and a brand new, classical-meets-trance original composition, “hypocrite”, cascades is a celebration of the traditional and experimental, dissolving the old into the new.

two floor-smashing highlights from the gnarliest corner of the spectral sound library get a welcome reissue on the first limited addendum 12” to the dope jams nyc volume 1: 2005-2012 compilation. first up is futuristic acid banger “poison dart” by 2 am/fm, the double-headed beast of ann arbor’s d’marc cantu and james t. cotton. beginning with an eerie synth coiling endlessly around a shuffling, anxious beat, the track unexpectedly blasts off with one of the nastiest acid basslines since “washing machine.” commanding, otherworldly, and freaky to the core. on the flip, cotton flies solo and tosses listeners headfirst into his chaotic and terrifying “bizarre carnival.” pounding kicks, blown-out bass and frenzied synths relentlessly collide with one another, creating an endless nightmare of a world on the verge of machine-induced annihilation.

new york’s sheik n beik continue to assert themselves as a trusted outlet of chilly, understated techno following up releases from xamiga, keita sano and hermans with a va from family members ivvy, mr dello, og ag and ray rose. first up is mr dello with ‘pilgrims’ - a bold march that propels few finely crafted elements with deft usage of warped analogue fx. intensity snowballs throughout as metallic synths thicken before og ag aka andrew grant follows up with ‘410 prospect’ - an intergalactic transmission rich with bending synth lines. one half of dirk largo, ray rose then casts his eyes down in following up with tight, shuffling drums and buoyant synth tones all suffused with a healthy dose of dub before ivvy - a fresh alias from madison levine. originating from seattle’s burgeoning hardware scene, he offers up ‘shape speed’ - a languid, capacious groove that drives thick drums through dense and dubby textures that round off a solid addition to a catalogue continuing to go from strength to strength.

spatial cues is a series of split singles sounding out main(void)’s and kon janson’s shared musical space. operating out of berlin and london, the two artists join forces to showcase their mutual vision of techno music. cues001 starts off the series with two immersive yet driving tracks, both built upon breathing and soughing atmospheres that wrap themselves around clear-cut, straightforward rhythms. guided by bleepy accents, cues001 a takes you on a stormy 10 minute ride through subtly shifting layers of sound, revealing its hidden depths in two slowly climaxing breaks. steadily evolving towards its floating finale, cues001 b contrasts a mesmerising percussion pattern with a steaming machine sound that loses itself in endless feedback cascades.

after a strong run in the early 00 s, 3am recordings came back into action in 2016 with a various artists release that featured a range of artists closely tied to the label s foundations. now label boss al bradley is stretching his wings with -night owl-, a refined production that demonstrates his experience in the field of tech house. goshawk comes on board for a remix that takes the deep sweeping original and makes it into an effervescent summer time groover, while label regular michael scott nudges -night owl- into stripped down late night territory. the third remix from fourfourfour heads into oddball territory for those who like their house music off kilter and playful.

in its five years dgtl has carved its style and sound worldwide as one of amsterdams staple dance music institutions. this year the organisation is deepening its focus and vision. therefore dgtl is launching its own imprint dgtl records. the label builds on the festivals musical theme of an evocative cross section of the sounds and styles showcasing forward thinking, cutting edge artists. the one to kick off the new imprint will be the bulgarian hardware wizard kink. best known for his live performances, teemed with explosive energy, which for a consecutive year puts him to the no.1 spot of live acts on ra poll, he is also one of houses most in demand producers. kink has worked with dgtl for quite some time, including last years audiovisual installation transmission tower, where the first track neutrino was born. the melodic neutrino , kicks off with syncopating bassline. its interconnecting layers organically jump over and under each other, reflecting the organic character of kinks live performances, where every knob touch and turn matters. on the latter, he built the b-sider dynamo: i loaded my favourite element from neutrino in my computer and i tweaked the sound through various weird devices in my studio, till it sounded like a completely new track. as usual, he added a few endless loops on the record, for the adventurous djs, exclusively for the 12inch. the idea for the dgtl records artwork is to feature a different visual/graphic artist from the dgtl art program every year starting with the cover from tim buiting and his graphical visual of the liege train station, designed by calatrava for this years releases.

next up on tomorrow is now, kid! is an ep from rutilance recordings owner, dj steaw. the french artist crafted four sturdy tracks on this fresh ep. it is a perfect blend between chicago and new york house, with a big splash of acid throughout the disc. the hypnotising percussion and grimy sounds take you to new, unforeseen places. keywords for best describing this 12inch are, beyond any doubt, deep and vigorous. enjoy these four definite killers in the club.
